Design House opens for bare bones tour
Published: 02-Mar-2009
The second annual Washington DC Design House opened its doors this weekend for a bar bones tour in anticipation of the designers who transform its interior over the next month.
Following the success of the 2008 inaugural event, designers will takeover the rectory of St. John’s Episcopal Church, Georgetown and renovate the interior to showcase top trends and design ideas for homes. Most of the furnishings in each room of the DC Design House will be for sale.
The house will open later this spring for tours and ticket sales will benefit Children’s Hospital Foundation of the Children’s National Medical Center. Thousands are expected to visit the completed house.
Approximately 16 spaces including a kitchen, living room, parlors, library, bedrooms, baths and more will be given a new look with the project. The designers include Michael Roberson, Joseph Ireland, David Mitchell, Susan Thompson, Draza Stamenich, Iantha Carley and John Petro, among others.
DC Design House was developed by Skip and Debbie Singleton of DC Living Real Estate, who said they are thrilled about the rectory project.
“Not only will Children’s National Medical Center benefit from what we hope is an overwhelming response to see the Design House, but once the event is over the St. John’s rectory will have received enhancements to help preserve and update it’s rich interiors,” Mr Singleton said.
On Saturday, the public was invited to see the “before” version of the house and display boards illustrating designers’ future plans for the spaces. DC Design House will officially open on Saturday, April 18 through May 10, for ticketed tours of the 16 inspired rooms and spaces.
The rectory for St. John’s Church is a three-story Victorian mansion built in 1874-1875 at a cost of approximately $12,000.
More than 7,500 visitors toured last year’s DC Design House and more than $100,000 was raised for Children’s National Medical Center. This year’s house will also be a featured home on the 2009 Georgetown House Tour on Saturday, April 25.
